A graveside funeral service to celebrate the life of Judge Harriett Pierce, 80, will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Friday, September 24, 2021 at 2:00 PM. Memorials may be made to the South Carolina Oncology Associates Cares Foundation, 166 Stoneridge Dr., Columbia SC 29210.
Judge Pierce passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. The Honorable Harriett Spears Pierce, former probate judge for Kershaw County, faithfully served the citizens of Kershaw County and the Palmetto State for thirty‑six years. Her outstanding qualities were being firm but compassionate in her performance of her judge duties. For all who knew and loved her, you always knew where she stood on any issue. First in her life though was her family and friends. She enjoyed taking trips with them and entertaining them at her house. Harriett loved taking care of her yard which was always beautiful, sewing, and reading. One of the joys of her life was her beloved Shih tzu dog, Duchess.
She was born in Camden to the late Jack and Louise Spears with her father being a former Kershaw County councilman and instilling the love of public service. Harriett Spears was married to the late Lindsay B. Pierce, Jr. She recently was predeceased by her sister, Johnnie Carol Shull. The family would like to express appreciation to Mike and Melissa McCaskill for their dedication and kindness to Harriett.
Judge Pierce was a proven leader among leaders while serving her terms of office. In the South Carolina Association of Probate Judges, she held every office, including the presidency for eight of those years. She also was active in the National Association for Probate Judges. In December 2014 upon her retirement, she was recognized by the South Carolina House of Representatives and by her colleagues as the longest‑serving probate judge in the history of Kershaw County and as a much‑beloved public figure. Harriett enjoyed her terms as Probate Judge and took great pride in helping the people of the Palmetto State.
