Officer Chaney Boles

On 01 January 1943, at 4:40 A.M., Officer Chaney Boles and his partner, Officer Earl Stephenson, found the Back door of Findley's Tavern located at 1136 South Branson Street, standing open. Entering the Tavern to investigate, Officer Boles found one of three suspects that were inside crouched behind the kitchen door. When told to come out with his hands up, the suspect, John Bowie, fired several shots. One of the shots struck Officer Boles in the Head, Just above the right eye. Officer Boles died at Marion General Hospital a short time later. As Officer Stephenson ran to assist Officer Boles, the suspect fled by crashing through the front picture window and escaping. He was captured, along with his two accomplices, later that day. Officer Boles was an 18-year Veteran of the Marion Police Department.
