Richard "Dick" C. Bowman of Vernon, beloved husband of 53 years to Carol (Magdefrau) Bowman, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Oxford, MA, son of the late Rev. Paul J. Bowman and Harriet S. (Donovan) Bowman, Dick has been a Vernon/Rockville resident since 1956. He graduated from Rockville High School in 1965, received his Bachelor's Degree in Speech Pathology/Education from Boston University, his Master's Degree in Special Education from Central Connecticut State College, and his 6th year Degree from UCONN in Educational Administration. He was a Speech Pathologist with the Vernon Board of Education for 15 years before becoming a Special Education Supervisor, and then the Assistant Principal and Interim Principal at Rockville High School retiring in 2004. In retirement, he continued to stay active on numerous trusts and scholarship committees within the local community. Dick was a firefighter with the Vernon/Rockville Fire Departments for 50 years. He was proud to say he was the only member that was active on both the Rockville Fire Department and The Vernon Fire District. He served on the original Bi-Laws Committee for the consolidation of the two fire departments. Since 1973, he had been an active member of the Fitton Hose Company of The Town of Vernon Fire Department. Dick once rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and still served today as the Fitton Hose Company's Secretary. He also took pleasure in serving on other department committees. Dick was an active and dedicated member of the Union Congregational Church in Vernon. He held many positions, served on numerous committees and loved singing in the choir. Dick was a life member of the Rockville Elks Lodge # 1359. He was very much a family man who was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He especially loved traveling, vacationing at the beach and attending his grandchildren's school and sporting events. Besides his loving wife, he leaves his two sons, Craig Bowman and his wife Tracy and their daughter Emily of Ellington, and Kevin Bowman and his son Adam of Vernon, and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister Ruth Birtwell. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Union Congregational Church, 3 Elm Street in Vernon. Burial will follow at Grove Hill Cemetery, Rockville. His family will receive friends for calling hours on Friday, September 17th from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Vernon Volunteer Firefighters Association, P. O. Box 951, Vernon, CT 06066
