Born at home to Boyd and Pearl (Butterbaugh) Stouffer in Mt. Morris, IL. After high school graduation she received a degree in Chemistry and Zoology from Coe College in 1945. She earned her RN at Evanston Hospital School of Nursing in 1949 and a Public Health Certificate in 1953 and began a position at Freeport Memorial Hospital.
She married Norman Nelson in 1956 and they had two children, Jeffrey and Kristen. She became an avid quilter and belonged to several quilt groups and organizations.
She lived in Mt. Morris for most of her life.
