Father: Lewis Allen Decker, Sr.
Mother: Rosalie (Lopez) Decker
Sister: Michelle
Paternal Grandparents: Lewis Albert and Clarice Decker

Lewis Allen Decker, Jr. was born on June 15, 1971 to Lewis Allen and Rosalie (Lopez) Decker. He had one older sister, Michelle, who was born in 1967. He was a funny, happy, kind young man, who made me laugh a lot. I married his dad in 1979, and he was the ring bearer at our wedding. (He thought he might be a little old to be ring bearer, but we persuaded him that he was actually in charge of the rings, a much more responsible position.) Even after his dad & I separated, Allen (he NEVER went by his first name) and I kept in touch. He would call me just to say "hi" and sometimes to get advice on things he didn't want to ask his mom or dad about. The last day I spoke to him was December 20, 1987. He was going to spend the holidays with his mom's side of the family in southern California, & he wanted to make sure we said "Merry Christmas" to each other. I told him to call me when he got home, and we would go out for a belated holiday celebration; the call ended with each of us telling the other, "I love you."

Early on Monday morning, Dec. 28, I got a phone call from my husband. Allen had been coming home from a party with two of his cousins and apparently there had been some drinking involved. The driver (who was not Allen), lost control of the vehicle, and it crashed into a fence. Allen was sitting in the passenger seat, and he suffered severe head trauma. The driver and the other passenger were relatively unhurt. After giving the family time to get to the hospital, Allen was taken off life support and died shortly thereafter.

A Bright, Shiny Star died that day. We will never know his true potential or what this kind, smart, thoughtful young man could have accomplished. I am just grateful that we had a chance to say "Merry Christmas" and "see you soon."
