Spc. Matthew K. Reece of Harrison, Ark., is the son of son of Preston B. Reece and Tammy Phillips Vanderwaal. Known as Kyle to everyone, he grew up a typical child playing and running in the yard with his cousins. Kyle enjoyed basketball, video games, fishing, and the outdoors. He also enjoyed working with the men who fought beside him in his unit, while serving in the Army. His true love was spending time with his family. An avid hunter and fisherman, he took to being an infantryman. He joined the Army in September 2005 to fight in Iraq. He was eager to go over there and get that straightened out. It was something he wanted to do. Kyle's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, and the Parachutist's Badge. His maternal grandfather, Norman Phillips and his paternal grandparents, Blaine and Merle Reece, preceded him in death. Kyle died in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device at age 24. He is survived by his wife, Chauntelle and two children.
