Dr. Rex H. Newton Jr., 85, of Pittsburgh, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, in his residence. He was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Wilkinsburg, son of the late Rex H. Newton Sr. and Martha (Puffinburg) Newton. He was employed as a medical doctor and, in 1968, was appointed as chief of clinical services and physical medicine and rehabilitation at Harmarville Rehabilitation Center, now Health South, for 50 years, retiring June 6, 2006. He was a physician for 60 years. He was a Naval veteran of the Korean War, a 1936 graduate of Wilkinsburg High School and a 1945 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Newton received numerous awards including 1991 Outstanding Physician's Award from the National Association of Rehabilitation Professionals, 1987 Physician of the Year Award from the Federation of Independent School Alumnae and in 1992 The National Award- The Edward W. Loman M.D., Award from the American College of Rehabilitation Medicine. Following retirement in 2006, he was appointed emeritus chief of Clinical Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Health South in Harmarville. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and was placed in charge of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at San Diego Naval Hospital. Upon returning to Pittsburgh in 1958, Dr. Newton started a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Oakland. In 1960, he began his own practice in the same field and began working part time at the Harmarville Rehabilitation Center, The D.T. Watson Home for Crippled Children, The United Mine Workers Health and Retirement Fund, Presbyterian-University Hospital, Sewickley Hospital, Westmoreland Hospital and South Side Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alice L. (Hopkins) Newton; a son, Robert D. (Patricia) Newton, of Gilpin Township; a daughter, Nancy N. (Robert) Smith, of Meadville; a twin sister, Mary Martha "Molly" (John) Morris, of Hartford, Conn.; and four grandchildren, Christina M. Newton, Rachel A. Newton, Elisabeth N. Smith and Natalie L. Smith. There will be no public visitation. Relatives and friends will be welcomed at his memorial service at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Forks-Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gilpin Township. Officiating will be the Rev. Kevin E. Anderson. Interment will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sandy Creek, N.Y. Arrangements are entrusted to CLAWSON'S, Second at Main streets, Leechburg, 724-842-1051.
