George R. Newton, Jr., a lifelong resident of Fayetteville-Ft. Bragg, peacefully passed away September 12, 2021 at the age of 82.
Born in New Britain, Connecticut to the late Col. George Richard Newton, Sr. and Kathryn Newton, the family moved to Ft. Bragg on Pearl Harbor Day in 1941. A proud graduate of Fayetteville Sr. High School, he joined the United States Army in 1957 and married his beloved wife, Glenda, in 1962. His military career stretched 20 years on active duty, including many different duty stations, the Vietnam conflict, and a Bachelor's Degree from Coker College, retiring at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 in 1978. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal W/4 Campaign Stars, Army Commendation Medal (1st OLC), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry W/Palm. Upon retirement, he continued his connection to the military by volunteering for The Retired Officers Association.
After retirement, he taught at Fayetteville Technical Institute and, later, Robeson Community College. He dedicated his life to service through many local organizations, including Highland Presbyterian Church as a Deacon, Boy Scout Troop 706 as Scoutmaster, The Cumberland County Shriners Club as secretary and member of the Oriental Band, and the National Sojourners. George also served at the VA Medical Center helping other Veterans make their appointments and finding their way around the Ramsey St location.
Breaking his wrist as a child, he learned to play the drums under doctor's orders. This turned into a lifelong passion in which he played in several bands, was featured on a record, and continued to practice until just a few years ago. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Glenda, his son Richard of Fayetteville, and his son and daughter-in-law, David and Joy Newton of Severna Park, MD. In addition, George adored his four grandchildren, Joshua and Matthew of North Carolina and Giuliana and Caleb of Maryland.
A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at Highland Presbyterian Church. A visitation will be held before the service from 10:45am to 11:45am. Burial will follow the service at Lafayette Memorial Park.
