PECKICONIS, STEPHEN, 68, of Cape May, died Tuesday in Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.
Mr. Peckiconis was born on a farm in Perkasie, PA. He had been a Cape May resident for 25 years.
He was a retired Chief Warrant Officer 4, serving 30 years in the US Coast Guard. During his service career, he traveled extensively, serving as a "ships clerk." He had been stationed in many areas of the world including Belguim and Hawaii and on the Cutter Westwind, and retired from the Coast Guard Electronics Engineering Station (EECEN) in Lower Township in 1977.
Mr. Peckiconis was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Cape May. He was a member of the Chief Warrant Officers Association; a member of the Fleet Reserve Association; and a member of the Cape Coin Club.
He was a member and former chairman of the Cape May Zoning Board. He was chairman of the Citizens Postal Advisory Commission, in Cape May and ran for City Council several times.
Mr. Peckiconis was well known in Cape May as the "Perennial Gadfly" for his challenging nature concerning happenings around Cape May often seen riding his bike in and around town.
He worked at the Arcade on the Boardwalk for 20 years handing out change for customers.
Mr. Peckiconis is survived by: his wife of 40 years, Joan E.; two daughters, Mary Alice Peckiconis of Washington, DC and Jeanne Marie Peckiconis of Kennebunk, ME; two sons, Stephen John Peckiconis of Boston, MA and Edmund Francis Peckiconis of North Cape May; one brother, Peter Peckiconis of Abington, PA; two sisters, Josephine Ahlum of Quakertown, PA and Rose Ahlum of Sellersville, PA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9 AM in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Cape May. Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 PM in the Sudak-Danaher Funeral Home, Cape May. Burial will be in the Cape May Co Veterans Cemetery, Cape May Court House.

Cape May City Flags are at half-staff to honor Peckiconis. Mayor Robert Elwell has ordered that flags around town fly at half-staff to honor Stephen Peckiconis. Peckiconis, a North Street resident who attended just about every City Council meeting for the last quarter century, died on Tuesday.

Peckiconis, who also served on the local Zoning Board, was well known for riding his bicycle around town and speaking out at City Council meetings. He especially put pressure on council when local ordinances were not enforced.

City Council is looking for suggestions from residents on how to honor Peckiconis. There is talk of putting a plaque on the chair he always sat in - the front row on the Washington Street side of the City Hall auditorium - but council is accepting other ideas before a decision is made. A moment of silence was held for Peckiconis at Tuesday night's council meeting.

Mayor Elwell said he visited Peckiconis a few weeks ago at the hospital and even though he was ill all he wanted to discuss was what should be done to make the city run better.

"At times he got under our skin but he kept us on the ball and on the right path. I guess the bottom line is, we were friends," said Elwell.
