Robert Lloyd Hinson, age 77, of Maggie Valley, NC passed away peacefully Monday, September 13, 2021 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. Lloyd was born in Bennettsville, SC.

He graduated from Laurel Hill School in 1962 in Laurel Hill, NC, and attended St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC as a music major. He was a gifted trumpet player and band leader. While at St. Andrews he formed his own band, Lloyd Hinson and the Highlanders, which later became The Lloyd Hinson Orchestra, performing swing music with the "big band sound" since 1963. In the late 1970's he added Shaggin', playing Carolina beach music. He and his bands performed across the eastern United States from New Jersey to Florida to Memphis, TN. He credits his passion for music to his Laurel Hill School band director, the late W.R. Bracey. Lloyd loved his job at The Laurinburg & Southern Railroad where he began as a trainman in 1964, advancing to vice-president before he retired after 30 years.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Marjorie Hinson; his son, Bobby Hinson (Claudia); his daughter, Amy Sandlin (Kerry); his step-son, Lee Allen (Mary); his step-son, David Allen (Tabitha); his grandchildren, Abby Hinson, Hannah Hinson, Hannah Allen, Emily Allen, Phoenix Allen, and Aiden Allen.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Hinson and his mother, Evie Hinson.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel officiated by Rev. Opie Swails. Burial will follow the service in Pinecrest Cemetery in Gibson, North Carolina. The family will receive friends prior to services on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
