Helen was a founding member of the PLHA and served as the President from 2000-2010. Known for wearing beautiful hats, she created the Parade of Hats for Healthy Hearts as a featured event at the annual Promise Land Festival. She also served on the committee for the development of the Heritage Book of Dickson County published in 2007.
Mrs. Hughes attended the Promise Land School and went on to Hampton High School in Dickson where she graduated in the Class of 1961. She went on to marry her high school sweetheart, Lathel Hughes, who passed in January of 2021.
Helen taught in the Metro-Nashville Schools for many years until she returned to her roots in the Promise Land community in 2000.
In addition to her parents and late husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers: Theodore, James, and Douglas Edmondson; and a sister: Wilma Edmondson Talley.
Those left to cherish her memory include: her daughter Stephanie Blackwell (Robert) of Clarksville; her sisters: Sylvia Holt and Bernice Heard, both of Nashville; her grandchildren: Danita LaShea Chromwell, Robert Lathel Blackwell, and Ryan Hughes Blackwell; great-grandchildren: Dashun Blackwell, Devon Blackwell, Rayvon Blackwell, Rayanna Blackwell, Johan Blackwell, and Amryan Blackwell; as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friends.
A homegoing celebration will take place on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at the John Wesley United Methodist Church located at 901 Benton Ave. Nashville, TN 37204. Visitation with the family will be from 12 noon until the time of service also at the church.
