David Lee Wood, 65, a long-time Tekonsha resident, passed away at his home on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 under hospice care.
A celebration of Dave's life will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the First Baptist Church in Tekonsha, 914 N. Main Street. Visiting time will be from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. and the ceremony will begin at 3:00 P.M. in the sanctuary. The family is being served by Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation.
Dave was born in Columbia City, Indiana on April 9, 1956 to Richard and Hilda (Shroyer) Wood, and as the youngest of 6 children, he was a never-ending object of practical jokes from his older siblings. He graduated from Tekonsha High School, and shortly after graduation, joined his father in the carpentry business. He continued in that line of work for the remainder of his life and was well-known in the community for his talent in this area. Dave donated numerous hours to the Tekonsha community, and recently built two "Little Libraries" to be utilized at the Tekonsha Community Library.
Before passing, Dave created a 65-year-old trail of integrity, honesty, and a wonderful sarcastic wit. When he wasn't working, he was spending time with his nieces "daughters", Andrea and Talia – along with their spouses and children – for family dinners, games nights, teaching them carpentry skills, and giving his great-nieces and nephews "grandchildren" a hard time. This banter occurred both ways, as the grandkids started calling him "Turtle" based on the speed he drove. He also liked to hang out at his sister Sharon's home, where he could play with the grandkids and then go home to peace and quiet. He had Weekly Business Meeting Calls with his brother Russ, who is also a carpenter, and spent a great deal of time with sisters, Linda and Patti, and niece Terri, working on projects in their homes. In addition, he knew by name everyone at Keep & Martinson Lumberyard and most of the local Home Depot employees.
Dave took fashion cues from no one. His signature daily look was worn jeans with holes in the pockets, a tape measure hanging from a belt loop, a well-worn and stained Troxel equipment hat, and a plain shirt covered in sawdust and paint. The look was completed by a pencil behind his ear.
Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Hilda and Richard Wood, a brother-in-law, Dick Troxel, and a nephew, Ian David Barnes.
Dave is survived by brothers Max (Janette) Wood of Ontario, CA, Russell (Sue) Wood of Dillsburg, PA; sisters Patricia Troxel of Bluffton, IN, Linda Barnes of Fort Wayne, IN and Sharon (Rich) Karn of Tekonsha; eight nieces and nephews; 17 great-nieces and nephews, and enough tools to make Bob Villa jealous.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of Dave's favorite places to frequent, the Tekonsha Township Library, 230 S. Church Street, Tekonsha, MI 49092.
