Algerian Statesman. He served as the President of Algeria from April 27, 1999 to April 2, 2019. He joined the National Liberation Front (FLN) in its fight for independence from France in 1957. He became an officer in the movement and after Algeria gained its independence in 1962, he served in several government ministerial posts. He remained in the government until Chadli Bendjedid succeeded Houari Boumedienne as leader in 1979. In 1981, he went into self-imposed exile after facing corruption charges. He returned to Algeria in 1987 and rejoined the FLN. In 1999, he was elected president and served until 2019, when he resigned from office after massive protests against him rocked the country.
