Mr. Hughes was a retired as a Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force and had served during Vietnam. He also retired from the National Weather Service in Wilmington where he was a meteorologist. He was a graduate of Bloom-Carroll High School in Carroll, Ohio and was an avid Ohio State Fan.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hughes is survived by two sons, Donald R. (Naomi) Hughes Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio and Brandon W. (Danica) Hughes of Wilmington, Ohio; a daughter, Amber Hughes of California; two brothers, David (Alicia) Hughes of Lancaster, Ohio and Rick Hughes of Lancaster, Ohio; four sisters, Pat (Rich) Carpenter of Texas, Margie Kosch of Baltimore, Ohio, Debi Hughes of Lancaster, Ohio, and Jan Hughes Greenlee of Lancaster, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Claire Hughes, Eden Hughes, Aileen Hughes, and Nolan Hughes.
In addition to his parents, a brother, Phil Hughes, is preceded in death.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Friday, September 24, 2021 at Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South Street, Wilmington, Ohio. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM, Friday. Burial will follow in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington, Ohio with military honors provided by the United States Air Force and the American Legion Post 49 Honor Guard
