Vernon O. Knutson, 69, of Fayal Township, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in St. Marys Medical Center, in Duluth, after a courageous battle with heart disease. He was born April 18, 1931, in Clay County, Minn., to Knute and Selma (Opsahl) Knutson.

He married Evelyn Hall on Oct. 30, 1954, in Twin Valley, Minn., and had lived on the Iron Range, since 1957. He held numerous jobs throughout his life, retiring from EVTAC in 1983. He was a member of United in Christ Lutheran Church and had served on the church council several times. He was a member of the Eveleth Elks Lodge 1161, Fayal Golden Club and Fayal Snowmobile Club. He was an Army veteran. Fishing was his passion, as well as extreme pride in his grandchildren.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 46 years, Evelyn; sons: Mike (Anni) Knutson, Greg (Pam) Knutson, Dave (Lori) Knutson; and Don (Dottie) Knutson; grandchildren: Beth, Sam, Alex, Jillian, Brittany, Bradley, Kristen, Matthew Pancho, Zachary and Christopher; sisters: Erma (August) Braunschwieg, Joyce (Dick) Forsythe, Judy (Bob) Penske, and Mavis (Ed) Wagner; brother-in-law, Ken Kappas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Shirley Kappas.

Burial will be in Eveleth Cemetery.
