Wayne Cannon Evans was born to David W. and Beatrice C. Evans on August 26, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and died December 11, 2019, at the age of 88. For 78 of those years, Wayne made his home in the Gilmer Park area of Salt Lake, graduating East High School and then the University of Utah with degrees in Journalism and in Advertising and Public Relations. He later spent his professional life as an advertising and public relations executive.
As a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served a mission to Wales, and filled a wide range of church assignments over 50 plus years.
Wayne also served two years in the US Army in Germany in the 1950s; was a member of the Salt Lake Rotary Club; a life-time member of the Salt Lake Branch of the NAACP; and 12 years a member of the Salt Lake Board of Education, four of those years serving as president. He developed a Used Oil Program for the State of Utah to collect and recycle waste oil. He was a member of John Morgan's team that developed the (now) Huntsman World Senior Games and was a member of the board of directors for 32 years. Wayne represented Arizona Indian tribes before legislative bodies and helped establish the Evans Biography Award (housed at the Mountain West Center, Utah State Univ.) that recognizes the best published biographies concerning individuals living in the interior west. And for five winters he served as a docent at the St. George Art Museum.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers David (Joy Frewin), Robert (Marianne Sharp), Edmund/Ted (Gloria Todd) and Carleton (Sally Urquhart). He is survived by his wife of 63 years Vella Neil Evans; his children: Laurel/Lark (Craig Galli), Nancy (Robert Peterson), Patricia (Allan Thomas) and Neil (Kristina Holden); 18 grandchildren; and a rapidly growing number of great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Garden Park Ward, 1150 E Yale Avenue, at 11 AM Saturday, December 28, with viewings at the church Friday the 27th from 6 to 7:30 PM and Saturday from 9 to 10:30 AM.
