Actress. She was an American actress who was known for her musical roles. Born Suzanne Lorraine Burce, an only child, Powell's acting career was in film and on stage. Before starting her professional career she achieved fame as a local Portland, Oregon child singer. When she became a teenager, her family moved to Los Angeles where she signed a vocal, dancing, and acting talent film contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Her big film debut came in 1944 as a performer in "Song of the Open Road." Her first lead role in a film came in 1945 in "Delightfully Dangerous." A few of the other top musical films she performed in were "A Date with Judy" in 1948, "Royal Wedding" in 1951 and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" in 1954. Beginning in the 1960s, she started performing live on stage with touring group productions like "My Fair Lady" and "The Sound of Music." She even starred in the leading role of the Broadway musical "Irene" from 1973 until 1974. In the 1980s she appeared on television as a one-episode guest. She returned to live performances on stage in 2000 in an Off-Broadway show "Avow," in the lead role. She sang for five U.S. presidents and the Queen of England. From 1944 until 2004 she had roles in 22 films and 23 stage productions. When her fifth husband Dickie Moore died in 2015, she relocated to Wilton, Connecticut where she stayed active in local stage productions. At the time of her death, she was widow and had a son and two daughters. She was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
