Ekkehard was a German immigrant entering the United States through Ellis Island in 1951. His family was sponsored by relatives in the U.S. He worked for several years on farms in Illinois before moving to Goshen to serve in 1-W Service in the 1950's. Ekkehard worked at Goshen College, where he met Wilma, until beginning his car repair business, specializing in VW's and eventually becoming Lichti Foreign Car Service. He served the Goshen community for 50 years as the only foreign car repair shop at the time.
Ekkehard was a faithful church member, most recently attending Family Worship Center at the Lighthouse. He had a long-time involvement in Bible Memory Ministries, leading the program, along with his wife, in their home church, thus showing his heart for children. He also served as the treasurer for many years. Ekkehard thoroughly enjoyed each baby, both his children and grandchildren, as they came along. Gardening and photography were his favorite past times.
