After Edith graduated as Valedictorian from Leesburg, she attended Texas State College for Women. While interning with the Extension Service, she met Grady King. They married on June 24, 1950, just after Edith graduated from college at 20 years old.
They moved to Jasper in 1951 where Grady became County Agricultural Agent for Jasper County. Children came along, but cancer struck Grady at an early age and Edith found herself as a young single mother at the age of 35.
She became a 3rd Grade teacher in Jasper ISD for 22 years. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church throughout her life, where many life-long friendships flourished. Edith enjoyed membership in the Civic Club as well as the Retired Teachers Association. Her love of gardening, sewing, baking bread and Aggieland are special memories for all who knew her.
Edith became "Gran Gran" to four grandsons, one granddaughter, and seven great grandchildren. Her smile and thoughtful ways brought joy to so many who crossed her path. She lived an exemplary life of almost 92 years, but it is her faith in Jesus that carried her through many trials, and is the reason we celebrate that she is now at home in Heaven.
She is survived by her son, Jim Bob King, and wife Paula; her daughter, Julianne Hodges and husband John; her grandchildren Jon King, David King, Russell Fluker and wife Christy, Nathan Fluker and wife Dena, Shelby Rikard and husband Josh; and her great grandchildren Caden, Riley, Grady, Bailey, Kylie, Deacon and Zachary.
She was preceded in death by her husband Grady King, son-in-law Denton Fluker, sister Virginia Pink Dorries, and brother William Julian.
Edith's funeral will be held at FBC Jasper at 11 am on Friday, September 17, with a visitation at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home on Thursday, September 16 from 5-7 pm.
She will be buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Paris, Texas at 10am on Saturday, September 18, 2021.
