Born in Dexter, NY, he was the son of the late William M. and Mildred Nelson West and was a graduate of Troy High School.
He married Mary "Joyce" Mazur West on October 22, 1954 and enjoyed nearly 67 years of a wonderful marriage.
He served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and was decorated with the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal and Ribbon.
Joe served the community with the City of Troy Police Department for 37 ½ years until retiring in July 1994 as Assistant Chief of Police. He also served as Death Investigator with Rensselaer County.
He was a life member of the VFW, Wynantskill American Legion, NRA a member of the NYS Chiefs of Police Association, Troy PBA, Troy Retired Command Official's Association where he was a founding member and a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Troy.
Beloved husband of Joyce, devoted father of Joseph E. (Nanci) West and Colleen West (Lisa LaBare), brother of C. Allen (late, Faye) West, Mary E. West, the late Jacqueline (Late Alfred Kearns and late Richard Cooney) Kearns-Cooney, William, Robert, John, Charles, Barbara West, Jean Baldwin and Nancy Perrotta, cherished grandfather of Brayton A. West (Samantha Diehl) and Mallory Lynn West, father-in-law of Cheryl L. West, also survived by several nieces and nephews and their families.
Burial with military honors will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
