Beloved wife and mom, Cheryl Myers, passed away on June 17, 2021 at the age of 63 after living years with the struggles of MS and the recent added battle of Mesothelioma. Cheryl was a strong, loving, caring, hard-working, and at times stubborn person who deeply touched the lives of everyone she knew. She is survived by her husband Mark, daughter Rachel, mom Vi, and sister Sue.

A Brief History:

Cheryl, daughter of Dan and Vi Richardson and older sister to Sue, was born on November 30, 1957.

Cheryl always loved school, excelling in her classes and getting straight A's. Her teachers loved her; "she was such a good student", as Sue would often hear when she encountered the same teachers down the line. Cheryl would finish her education by attending WSU and getting her Bachelor's in Accounting. As many can attest to, she was a Coug' through and through.

Using her accounting degree, she worked in the finance department of several different companies through the years; at one of these jobs is where she met Mark. At first they were just friends, but eventually Cheryl asked Mark to come over for dinner. He said he couldn't, and Cheryl thought, well, that's it, he's not interested, but then he asked her if they could make it another night instead and that's where the romance began; after all, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Mark and Cheryl were married in August of 1985. The minister who married them had known Cheryl most of her life and accidentally pronounced them Mr. and Mrs. Richardson!

In the Spring of 1990, Mark and Cheryl welcomed a daughter into the family, Rachel. Cheryl continued to work for the first few years, but once she was diagnosed with MS and had several attacks, she had to go on disability and became a stay at home mom, which, in Rachel's eyes, was the best thing a kid could ask for. Rachel loved always being able to come home to her mom, not needing any after school care programs or sitters, and grew up with steady structure which included a balance of work and play. Rachel also learned to grow up a little bit faster than other kids as she would help her mom around the house as her MS would progress; one time even making her mom a PB&J sandwich and bringing it to her in the office where Cheryl had fallen and wasn't able to get up until Mark came home later that day. Rachel wouldn't have her life any other way.

The family went on trips which included camping trips, beach trips, trips to amusement parks, those were mostly for Rachel's benefit, trips to the mountains, and sometimes Cheryl and Mark even got to go on a getaway all on their own; for their 30th wedding anniversary Rachel sent them on a trip to Spokane, paid for their hotel and for them to have a special treat waiting for them when they arrived. Throughout the years Cheryl would be mostly healthy while having the occasional MS attack which would end up progressing her disease and decreasing her mobility bit by bit. Eventually, Cheryl ended up needing to use a wheelchair 24/7 after breaking her leg in a fall at home in 2009.

Rachel moved out of the house in September of 2017. Shortly after that, in January of 2018, Cheryl got food poisoning and ended up in the hospital. The night before she went to the hospital she had fallen out of her wheelchair and injured her back, so the hospital made sure to take x-rays of her chest and a CT of her spine to make sure she didn't have any other injuries while also treating her for the food poisoning. On these images they found a mass in her right lung which turned out to be Mesothelioma, stage 4. Once Cheryl had recovered from her food poisoning, plans began for treatment of her cancer.

Since Cheryl had MS she was not a candidate for surgery as they didn't feel she would be able to recover from it, so chemotherapy was the plan; chemo would maintain the current size of the tumor, not be curative. Chemo was started within 2 months of diagnosis. Cheryl had almost 1 year straight of chemotherapy before experiencing any major problems, but then suddenly stopped eating, drinking, and was so out of it she ended up in the hospital. She was in the hospital for about 2 months, and spent another 1 month in recovery. In the years after this hospital visit she continued chemo, but had breaks in between rounds to give her body time to recover so, hopefully, this didn't happen again. Unfortunately, with the combination of her chemo, having lost the weight she had been trying to lose for years but now losing even more weight from chemo treatments, and not being able to get around as easily as before, her body wasn't working as well as it used to and she had several more trips to the hospital over the next 2 years.

2021 marked the beginning of the final decline. She was no longer getting chemo treatments but she was so weak that she wasn't recovering. In January she ended up in the hospital for a severe wound infection and didn't come home until March, then only about 2 weeks later had emergency surgery for a twisted intestine. She was home from the start of April until June 7th, which is when she went into the hospital for the final time due to breathing difficulty. At this point, everything had become too much for her body to handle. She was in the ICU until the night of June 16th when she was moved to the hospice center in the hospital. Her mom and sister, Vi and Sue, had been able to visit earlier in the week, Mark and Rachel were able to say their goodbyes that night. Cheryl passed away the next morning just before 9am with her hands being held by the nursing staff who were praying with her during her final minutes.
