Margie was born July 17, 1924, in Printer, West Virginia, the daughter of Hatler and Bessie Mae (Hatfield) Collins.
She attended high school in Beckley, West Virginia, and left school early and moved to Baltimore, Maryland to get a job in order to help her family financially. Margie worked at Glen L Martin airplane factory supporting the national war effort during WWII. She met her future husband, Jerry Ellis, there and they were united in marriage on June 3, 1945. Together they lived and raised their family in Iowa, retired to Florida and then later returned to Iowa but wintered in Florida. Jerry passed away in 2005.
Margie was a member of Grandview Park Church of Christ in Des Moines and Beta Sigma Phi. She worked 10 years for Lazy M Shoes part time and was a homemaker. Margie enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and flowers.
Margie is survived by her children: Mitchell (Bonnie) Ellis of Gulf Breeze, FL, Sue (Gary) Clem of Nevada, Kathy (Dave) Allbee of Redfield and Debbie (Lowell) Kingsbury of Ames; six grandchildren: Todd (Meredith) Van Benthuysen, Kyr (Lisa) Van Benthuysen, Trevor (Amy) Ellis, Michelle (Dave) Ellis-Souders, Kimberly (Brian) Wallace and Dustin Douglass; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her sisters, Beulah Harvey and Elizabeth Henderson.
A funeral service will be noon Friday, September 17, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed by going to www.rasmussonfh.com, clicking on Margie's photo, then tribute wall. The family requests face coverings be worn by those attending. Private family burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dementia Society in memory of Margie.
