Qatari Royalty. He served as the Emir of Qatar from August 20, 1949 to October 24, 1960. He was one of three sons of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani. On August 20, 1949, he became the emir of Qatar upon the abdication of his father. He went on to serve on the throne for the next eleven years before he abdicated in October of 1960. During his reign, he became the first emir to travel abroad, going to India, Egypt, Europe, Lebanon and the Levant. He also placed emphasis on education and infrastructure.
