Qatari Royalty. He served as the Emir of Qatar from October 24, 1960 to February 22, 1972. He was the second son of Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah Al Thani. In 1960, he assumed the throne of Qatar after his father abdicated in his favor. He went on to rule over the country for almost twelve years before being ousted by his cousin Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani in 1972. His reign saw both the country gain its independence as a sovereign nation in 1971 and vast financial improvements with the discovery of several new oil fields. He passed away in exile in London, England.
