Jackie "Jack" L. Carty, 95, of Swayzee, passed away at 3:30 pm on Friday, September 10, 2021, at Bickford in Wabash. He was born in Sandytown, Indiana, on February 2, 1926, to Ellen (Beard) Markello and Pete Shannon. He was raised by Ellen and Joseph Markello. On October 12, 1946, he married Ina Mae Trout, and she preceded him in death on June 22, 2015.

Jackie served in the United States Army during WWII from 1944-1946 in the 566th Signal Company, 66th Infantry Division. He achieved the rank of Private First Class and was awarded the EAME Theatre Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and WWII Occupation Medal.

Following his military service, Jackie worked in coal mines in Clinton, on high lines throughout Vermillion County, and on missile sites in Tucson, Arizona, and Nebraska. He then worked as a millwright at Chrysler until his retirement in 1988.

Jackie was a member of the American Legion Post 140 in Clinton and the 40 and 8 in Marion. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing sunflowers, and was an avid fisherman. Jackie also liked going to and participating in parades. He liked spending time with family, especially his picnics with his daughter, Gloria. He enjoyed the occasional cold beer and going to Bob Evans.

Survivors include his daughter, Gloria (Jim) Winget of Wabash; son-in-law, Jerry Russell; granddaughters, Stephanie (Paul) Yocum, Christa Peacock, and Olivia (Michael) Moreno; grandsons, Marcus (Amanda) Russell, Jack (Bev) Carty, and Levi (Bailey) Winget; 14 great-grandchildren; great-great-grandson, Silas; plus several nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his loving wife, Jackie was preceded in death by his father, Pete Shannon; mother, Ellen Markello; step-father, Joseph Markello; sons, Thomas Carty and Robert Carty; daughter, Luetta Jean Russell; grandsons, Robert Carty and Scott Carty; and brothers, Merle Carty, Robert Markello, Charles Markello, William Shannon, Verl "Windie" Shannon, and Larry Shannon.

The family will receive visitors from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 16, 2021, at Swayzee Christian Church, 110 N. Washington St., Swayzee, IN 46986.

An additional time of visitation will take place from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Frist Funeral Home, 458 Blackman St., Clinton, IN 47842. Immediately following visitation, a funeral service to celebrate Jackie's life will begin at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Clinton, IN.
