Robert S. Christy, age 83, passed on September 8, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for several years prior to his passing.

"Bob" as he was affectionately known, was born on September 11, 1937 in Salem, Oregon to Wilda R. and John P. Christy. The family moved from Oregon to Iowa in 1948.

Bob graduated from Humboldt High School in 1956. During high school, he was an outstanding athlete in many sports, earning several state titles in track and field.

Following high school he entered the workforce. During his long career he worked in retail and grocery, primarily in management.

On August 16, 1958, Bob married Donna M. Smith of Gilmore City, Iowa. He always said it was "love at first sight" when they met at age 16, to later marry in their early 20's. They had 5 children, known as "the 5 J's" - Jill, Jeff, Julie, Joel and Jana. Bob and Donna enjoyed attending their children's activities, and in later years their grandchildren's activities as they were able. They were married for 63 years and lived in the following five states: Iowa, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Missouri and Colorado. Country dancing was an activity they enjoyed for many years after they became empty nesters.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents John P. and Wilda R. Christy and stepmother Gertrude; siblings Pat, Virginia, Larry, Frank and Michelle. Also, two siblings passed as infants: Gartha Grace and Billy.

Bob is survived by his wife Donna and their 5 children: Jill (Katie), Jeff (Jill), Julie (Scott), Joel (Deborah), Jana (Chris); and 15 grandchildren: J'Lee, J'Nai, Karson (Jill); Jessica, Joelle, Jeffrey (Jeff); Drew, Jeremy, Mesa (Julie); Davis, Taryn (Joel), Zack, Dawson, Grace, Vivian (Jana). He is survived by the following siblings: Mary Ellen, Dan and Jerry.

Bob will be remembered as a devoted, loving, family man and a devout Catholic with a strong faith. He looked on the bright side of life and had a great sense of humor. Those who knew Bob would describe him as kind, considerate, fun-loving and compassionate. He was a model of unconditional love throughout his life. If anyone needed a hand, Bob was ready to help out. He was a die hard Denver Broncos fan and had a contagious laugh that would make anyone smile.

We lost a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend and heaven has gained a gentle, playful, loving, sweet soul with a joyful laugh and a big heart.

The funeral service for friends and family will be held at St. John and Paul Catholic Church, 1401 1st Avenue South in Altoona, Iowa at 10:30 am on Monday, September 27th, 2021. The burial service will follow at Coon Rapids Cemetery at 3:00 pm. All are welcome.
