He started school at Norris, Montana, transferring to Harrison Public School when Norris closed, graduating with the class of 1969. He enrolled at Montana State University to study Range Ecology. In 1970 his father said he had to calve out his beloved Hereford cows himself. Having taken the quarter off the United States Army quickly changed his plans and drafted him. While home on leave he met his beloved wife Virginia "Ginny" Lee (Frye) Jackson. He received his Honorable Discharge after the early out option in 1971. Ward then returned to Montana State University to continue his education. This time only taking a brief trip to Boise, Idaho to elope and marry Ginny on August 27, 1973. Maintaining a heavy course load Ward graduated from Montana State University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Range Ecology, Ward was one quarter short of earning his Masters in Range Ecology and Mathematics. Ward and Ginny's first child, Virginia Bronwen was born on September 26, 1974, on October 5, 1976 their first son, Ward Joel II was born, followed by Benjamin Zedekiah on August 19, 1980. Some of Ward's greatest joys were imparting advice and wisdom to his children while watching them mature.
Ward was an active Mason in the Terry Masonic Lodge No. 74 also Past Master for Mount Jefferson Lodge No. 56 in Pony, Montana. Community and Agricultural groups were also important to him with the Society for Range Management, the Montana Stock Growers Association and Range Days being his favorite. Ward was extremely proud of serving as Madison County Commissioner from 1995 to 1999. He never felt like he had done enough and always put his full abilities to use. Of course his main duty was maintaining, expanding, and improving the legacy of the Jackson Ranch. He would often admit he did love horses slightly more than his Hereford cows. Cheryl Corneliusen started riding with Ward and Joel in 2003. She quickly became Ward's friend and assistant manager of his herd. In 2007 Larry and Ruby Bearley started helping Joel on the ranch. True to his nature Ward always recognized good help working for a family member, offered them better hours, better pay and stole them. For the past 5 years they have lived on the ranch as assistant managers for Ward's cows on a daily basis working hand in hand with Cheryl.
For the last quarter of a century Ward's greatest joy was visiting with his 11 grandchildren. Jacksons do not smile in photos, Ward is smiling in every photo with his grandchildren. Lori Sabol has been his constant close companion since 2007, never leaving his side or missing a meal with him.
