Douglas Craig George was born July 14, 1949, in Tonasket, Washington to Donald and Dorothy (Hunter) George and died July 26, 2021, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. Doug was an organ donor and gave his corneas to two blind people so they could have the gift of sight.

He graduated from Skagit Valley Community College and completed his college studies with a degree in microbiology from WSU. He was a proud Cougar the rest of his life.

Doug's first job after college was with the Grays Harbor County Environmental Health Department. He eventually became Director of the Department and spent his entire career there. He was on the Montesano City Council from 1984 through 1994 and served as Mayor for five years from 1995 through 1999. He was appointed Mayor in 1995 and elected Mayor in 1996.

Doug had two wonderful kids, Christopher and Amber. He enjoyed family camping trips, hunting with Christopher, soccer games with Amber and time on "The Bay." The family attended Calvary Lutheran Church of Aberdeen where he served as an elder. He loved to play golf at Oaksridge Golf Course in Elma where he served on the board for several years.

In 1996, Doug met his life partner in adventures, his best friend and the love of his life, Sue Homchick, who was by his side and took wonderful care of him. They had 24 years together and traveled the world including the countries of Iceland, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Sicily, Suez Canal, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Crete, Paris, Oman, Caribbean Islands, Cuba, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Columbia, Guatemala, Hawaii, India and many places in Mexico, with Puerto Vallarta being their favorite.

Doug was a true outdoorsman. He loved hunting in Eastern Washington with his great friend, Marc Galland. When at home he was always outside. His yard was beautiful, his garden plentiful and his plants were pruned to perfection. He loved to plant, water, harvest and burn his clippings in his fire pit. He over-wintered his potted geraniums in his greenhouse where he spent many hours. He had two worm farms that he cared for and used their castings to enrich his soil. Doug was a woodworker and handyman. He could fix anything. He built beautiful engraved wooden boxes.

Doug was never idle. In his spare time, he was an avid reader, interested in politics and was a successful dabbler in the stock market. He volunteered at the Hoquiam Food Bank and greatly enjoyed the company of the other volunteers and in turn helping his community. He kept his worms well fed and happy with discards from the food bank produce.

Doug is survived by his loving partner, Sue and his children: Christopher George of Montana, and Amber George Marusak (Ken) and their soon-to-be born twins of Olympia. Doug was hoping to live long enough to meet them. He is also survived by Sue's children: Comet Brower of Montesano, and Stacey Brower (Rich Buchanan) of Lake Sammamish and their two boys, Gunnar and Nash whom he adored.

He promised to be a guardian angel to Gunnar and Nash, and Amber and Ken's twins. Other survivors include his sister Daphne of Normandy Park and his brother Dennis of Mt. Vernon. Those preceding him in death were his parents, Donald and Dorothy, and his sister Julie Sparks

A celebration of Doug's life and open house will be held Aug. 28 at the Hoquiam Elks from 3 to 6 p.m. Donations in Doug's name may be made to the Hoquiam Food Bank, P.O. Box 472, Hoquiam, WA 98550.

Doug was an honest, moral, loving man. He will be missed by many.

Cremation arrangements are by Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.
