Mrs. Betty Bennett, a homemaker of the Turkey Creek Community and former Carthage businesswoman, died at 7:47 a.m. Saturday morning September 11, 2021 two days before her 78th birthday. She was admitted September 3rd being treated for cardiac complications.

Eld. Dave Silcox officiated at the 11 a.m. Wednesday morning funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Bennett family lot in the Gardens of the Cross at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.

The twelfth of fourteen children, nine daughters and five sons and the last surviving, she born Betty Lou Silcox in Carthage on September 13, 1943 and was the daughter of the late Ruben Andrew Silcox who died at the age of 68 on January 3, 1961 and Dora Lee Bowman Silcox who died at the age of 73 on February 28, 1975.

Siblings preceded her in death were eight sisters, Ruby Lee Silcox Angel who died October 20, 2010 at the age of 91, Pauline Silcox Smith who died at the age of 81 on September 13, 2006, Martha Elizabeth Silcox Bennett who died at the age of 87 on March 21, 2021, Maggie Mai Silcox Davis who died at the age of 81 on January 27, 2009, Lillian Sue Silcox Givens who died at the age of 53 on April 25, 1989, Deborah Silcox who died at the age of 50 on March 14, 2002, Donnie Jean Silcox Scurlock who died at the age of 69 on March 31, 2014 and Ethel Silcox Bennett who died at the age of , five brothers, Virgil Savage Silcox who died at the age of 58 on February 2, 1979, Ed Thomas Silcox who died at the age of 66 on August 5, 1989, George Henry Silcox who died at the age of 54 on February 11, 1986, Benton Allen Silcox who died at the age of 68 on March 31, 2006 and Clint Key Silcox who died at the age of 68 on February 28, 2010.

Mrs. Bennett was a 1961 graduate of Smith County High School where she majored in Commercial and home economics. In home ec she received both the junior and chapter degrees and was in the band and spring festivals both her freshman and sophomore years.

In Carthage on October 26, 1963, she was united in marriage to Lancaster Community native Wendel Wilkey Bennett.

They were preceded in death by a son, Wendel "Wenn" Bennett who died February 26, 2021 at the age of 47.

Mr. and Mrs. Bennett owned and operated Bennett's Service Station at the North end of the Cordell Hull Bridge until their retirement in 2005. They had purchased the Woodard's Service Station from Harry T. and Christine Woodard on March of 1978.

Mrs. Bennett was saved as a teenager and was baptized into the full fellowship of the East Carthage Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband Wendel is their daughter, Retta Bennett Ellenburg and husband Richard of the Kennys Bend Community; four grandchildren, Lauren Ellenburg of South Carthage, Alexia Bennett of Smyrna, Jared Ellenburg and wife Tori of the Kempville Community, Julianna Wright of the Riddleton Community; great-grandson, Colton Ellenburg of South Carthage.
