The family announces with profound sadness that Bob passed away peacefully at the London Health Sciences Victoria Hospital on August 15, 2017 of complications from lymphoma.

Professor Young studied at McGill University, Institut d'Études Politiques (Paris) and Oxford University. He was privileged to engage with some of the finest social scientists in the world.

In 1991, Bob joined the Political Science Department at the University of Western Ontario. He became Professor in 1993 and was awarded a Canada Research Chair in Multilevel Governance in 2003. At Western, he learned from colleagues in politics, history and economics, and published many papers and articles about politics in the Maritimes, free trade, and secession in the world and in Quebec. He engaged in public debates related to his research and wrote, among other books, The Secession of Quebec and the Future of Canada. More recently, he headed a large research project on public policy in municipalities.

Predeceased by his parents, Gordon Alexander Young and Marion Katharine Young (Stevenson), Bob leaves his loving wife, Louise Gadbois, and his two brothers, Bill Young and Don Young (Maureen Marrin), his nephews, Troy Oakoak and Duncan Young (Kate) and his niece Alicia Young and their families. He is also mourned by his remarkable aunts, Dorothy Antrobus and Ruth Lodge, and their families. Bob loved all his Gadbois family relations, who will miss him very much, as will his many close friends and colleagues.

Throughout his professional career, Dr Young has had a profound influence on his undergraduate and graduate students. He was very generous in the time and attention spent with them. He will be remembered by his colleagues as a gifted and hard-working scholar. He received many awards and distinctions and has left an indelible mark on the Canadian public policy field.
