Obituary
Jerry William Nelson was born on January 17, 1935, to Doris Simcox Nelson and Harry Nelson, in Albion, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother John (Marilyn) Nelson. He leaves his wife, Carole Ganim Nelson and three daughters, Julie (Barry) Michaels, Janis (Greg) Gage, Linnea (Kenneth) Fecher, one son, Michael (Niki) Nelson, and 11 grandchildren. He was a part of two large extended families also, the Nelsons, the Simcoxs, the Ganims and the Kassoufs. Jerry graduated from Marshalltown High School and went on to earn a doctorate in Education at Indiana University. He spent his career counseling, teaching, and working with special needs children and adults. He was able to relate to children in a unique and empathetic way, often teaching them how to build something or solve a problem, and thus entering into their world and their level of interest and comprehension. Jerry was a talented musician who had perfect pitch and a resounding bass voice. He sang in church choirs throughout his life and played the accordion with several accordion groups, most recently, the Oakwood Accordion Band. Perhaps his greatest talent was his unique ability to sleep anywhere at any time at will. Jerry was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2009 and finally succumbed on September 2, 2021. Funeral Service will be 4pm, Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 326 Madison Ave., Covington, KY 41011. A Celebration of Life Reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity.
