Juanita (Nita) Powell passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 16, 2021 at the age of 77.

Nita was born in Portland, Oregon on May 9, 1944 to Victor and Florence (Hicks) Zerfing. She was the oldest of four children. She is survived by her three younger brothers; Bob Zerfing (Elaine), Carl Zerfing (Patty) and Jim Zerfing (Christie). Nita spent her entire childhood growing up in Northeast Portland and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1962.

She went on to marry Herman Powell in 1963. Together Herman and Juanita raised four children; Lynda Mueller (Jeff), Tricia Soles (Greg), Loretta Lindsley (Jim) and Jeff Powell (Tracy).

Nita devoted the first 10 years of her married life to being a stay at-home mom and house wife. Once her youngest child was ready for school she decided to go back into the work force. She worked for the Hood River County School District for over years. She then found a long-standing career that she was very successful in with at Key Bank of Oregon. She worked for Key Bank both in Hood River and Portland for over 20 years. She had received several awards for outstanding performance throughout her career at Key Bank as well as the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Club.

Shortly after Juanita's husband, Herman passed away, she meant Gordon Newlands. Gordon and Juanita became best friends and have enjoyed many adventures together. They joined a bowling league which became a big part of their lives for many years. Over time Gordon had become very precious to her and was loved and welcomed into the family by all. Juanita's family can't thank him enough for the love, companionship and support he has shown toward her for almost 20 years.

Juanita enjoyed playing Yahtzee, bowling, reading books, Starbucks coffee, going to the Oregon coast and participating in the crab races in Garibaldi with her brothers, and spending time in the sun, especially in Hawaii. But most of all, Juanita loved spending time with her beloved family that had grown very large.

She was blessed with 12 grandchildren; Mike, Nikki, Amanda, Johnny, Justin, Aaron, Matt, Victor, Alyssa, Bradly, Ocean and Brooke. She was also blessed with 13 great-grandchildren; Kaiden, Charlie, Mikey, Nathan, Ryan, Landan, Jackson, Natalie, Timmy, Audrina, Grayson, Brielle, and Cashton, who all loved her very much. She will be greatly missed by her adoring family.

Juanita joins both of her parents in heaven, along with her husband Herman, who she was married to for 37 years, and her sweet grandson, Victor.

Juanita had a strong faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was confident that she was going to her eternal home before she passed from this life into the loving arms of Jesus on Friday, July 16th. In her later years she was an active member of Columbia River Baptist Church in St. Helens, Oregon and she will be missed by her church family very much.

A celebration of Juanita's life both here on earth and in heaven will take place on Thursday, July 22nd at Mt. Scott Funeral Home in Portland, Oregon at 10:00 AM. All are invited.
