Glenda Pauline Roberts
SEPTEMBER 25, 1942 – SEPTEMBER 9, 2021

Glenda Pauline Roberts, 78, from Grand Saline, Texas, passed away on September 9, 2021. She had been admitted to a nursing home three days before her death. Glenda was born on September 25, 1942 in Lebanon, Missouri, to the late Glen Roberts and Coyla Evelyn Rosendahl Roberts.

Her father was a career Calvary man and a wonderful musician. He played in the military band at USO dances at Ft. Brown, Brownsville, Texas. Her mother was a teacher in S. Texas, when rural teachers did not need a degree. She met Glen at one of the dances where his band was playing. Glen could play all the reed instruments and loved performing Big Band music for dances. The couple married in Brownsville, Texas. Glenda remembers her mother telling her that one day Glen came home so excited because he had just learned a new song, "Put Your Little Foot" and he couldn't wait to play it at one of the dances.

After Pearl Harbor, Glen was sent to Missouri to set up Ft. Leonard Wood. Evelyn and daughter, Dorothy, age 9, followed Glen to Missouri when her teaching job had finished. Glenda was born during this stay in Missouri. From there the young family lived in Oregon, Washington State and finally back to Wills Point, Texas when WWII ended.

Glenda's mother finished her education as a teacher with a BA from N. Texas and a Master's from East Texas University. The family which now included four children moved to Forney which was then a small town. Glenda was in the Junior High and High School band and was a majorette at Forney High School. Glenda's mother loved learning and was working on her doctorate at Texas Women's University when Glen had a heart attack and she had to abandon her degree. Glenda remembered that her mother never revealed her grief about giving up the PhD program.

When Evelyn obtained a teaching position in Wills Point, the family moved back and Glenda graduated from Wills Point ISD in 1960. After high school, Glenda attended Henderson County Junior College, for one semester and was selected to be a member of the Drill Team. Glenda's mother always wanted Glenda to attend TWU, so Glenda transferred and obtained her teaching degree and certificate from TWU.

After graduation from TWU, Glenda began a teaching career which lasted many years. This included teaching reading in Aubrey, Texas, and 5th grade elementary in Dallas. After she married, the couple moved to Austin where Glenda taught in the Children's Unit at the Austin State Hospital and then at Lake Travis Elementary. When Glenda was single again, she moved back to Wills Point and taught at Fruitvale. Glenda ended her career teaching in Elementary Special Education in Quitman in 2005. Glenda had been active member of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church for 23 years. She was past President and Vice President of the Daughters of the King, Grace Chapter and was recording secretary of the Delta Kappa Gamma Teaching Sorority, Beta Omega Chapter.

Glenda described her mother as a soft-hearted person who loved people and animals. This trait would also describe Glenda was always very kind and always saw the good in people. She loved her two cats and worried about what would happen to them after she died. She was so thankful that a home was found for them and that she could keep them until she passed on.

Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Evelyn Roberts; older sister, Dorothy Lyle; younger brothers, Bob Roberts and Jim Roberts.

Left to mourn her passing are her nephews, Don Roberts and Bill Lyle; nieces, Sarah Longoria, Kim Warrick and Deborah Aldrich; she leaves many close friends, who will miss her greatly.

Glenda had been on hospice for the past year and was very appreciative of her hospice caretakers. She had extra help at home, whom she greatly appreciated and this allowed her to stay at home almost to the end. She also had help from her dear friends, Lynn Gilmer, Mary and Gerry Crane and her friends at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Mineola, Texas.
