Abiel Briggs, the fourth of Thomas Briggs and Abigail Gregg Briggs' ten children, was born September 25, 1820, in Bristol, Ontario County, New York. In 1835 the entire family moved to Sharon, Medina County, Ohio, where they established themselves in farming. Abiel's mother died when he was 16. On May 10, 1846, he married Harriet Cornelia Dinsmore (1831-1901). The couple had at least seven children.

In 1876 (according to an account attributed to Abiel's granddaughter Helene Barnard Sutliff Parker), Abiel joined some of his siblings in California and bought 240 acres in Winters, Yolo County. When Abiel's brother George Gregg Briggs took his wife and children to Spain to study raisin production, Abiel looked after George's ranches in Davisville, now Davis, and Fresno, California.

While in Davis, Abiel, his wife, and their daughters Effie and Helen all were sickened with typhoid fever. Abiel's wife and daughter Helen recovered, but Abiel died on December 14, 1878, and his daughter Effie died about that time.
