In 1876 (according to an account attributed to Abiel's granddaughter Helene Barnard Sutliff Parker), Abiel joined some of his siblings in California and bought 240 acres in Winters, Yolo County. When Abiel's brother George Gregg Briggs took his wife and children to Spain to study raisin production, Abiel looked after George's ranches in Davisville, now Davis, and Fresno, California.
While in Davis, Abiel, his wife, and their daughters Effie and Helen all were sickened with typhoid fever. Abiel's wife and daughter Helen recovered, but Abiel died on December 14, 1878, and his daughter Effie died about that time.
