Andrew M. Schmid Jr.
Ad agency owner was tireless volunteer
After a courageous battle with multiple sclerosis, Andrew M. (Andy) Schmid Jr. peacefully left this world on Sept. 7, 2021. As she has been for 26 years, his wife Cindy, the love of his life, was with him and had her hands lovingly wrapped in his. Together, for many years, they fought through Andy's health challenges and cherished each day no matter how difficult life became. Their love story evolved out of love, respect, kindness and laughter.
Born Aug. 19, 1957, in Nanticoke, he was the son of the late Andrew M. Schmid Sr. and Shirley M. (Lasher) Schmid.
A graduate of Berwick High School's Class of 1975, Andy earned a bachelor of arts degree from Kutztown University. He became the consummate professional proudly forming, owning and operating his own agency, Schmid Advertising, in Bloomsburg for 36 years. As he was in every aspect of his life, Andy was devoted to his clients and worked tirelessly, often denying himself time away from his office and time spent with his wife. Those who know and love Andy know him to be a kind, honest and selfless person. He possessed character, integrity and grace. Andy had an incredible volunteer spirit that he channeled into a passion for helping the lives of children plagued with cancer and other illnesses. In 1990, he accepted an invitation to become a volunteer member of the Danville Ronald McDonald House Board of Directors. In true fashion Andy went on to serve an incredible 26 years. During his tenure he accepted the added responsibilities of president, vice president, secretary and chairperson of the golf, development and communications committees. He also devoted additional time as a board liaison to Ronald McDonald House Charities of NEPA.
Thirty years ago and prior to officially joining the board of directors, Andy parlayed his love of golf into creating the Danville Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament. It is now the signature annual fund-raising event for the children's charity. His quiet diligence and endless devotion to the mission helped the House thrive through very challenging economic times, provide a summer camp for children with cancer, and ensure that families were able to be together during a crisis. After Andy's declining health forced him to resign from his volunteer work, the Ronald McDonald House honored Andy's unprecedented service by appropriately renaming the golf outing the Andrew Schmid Golf Tournament.
Andy leaves us with a wonderful legacy reflective of a beautiful human being who lived a life of love, kindness and service to others.
His sister, Ann Marie DeNoia, preceded him in death.
Andy is survived by his wife, the former Cindy Seiwell; his sister, Barbara, wife of Emery "Jim" Seeley, of Berwick; three nieces and three nephews.
A visitation will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of funeral services at 1:30 p.m. at the Mayo Funeral Home Inc., 110 Chestnut St., Berwick, with the Rev. Chad Hebrink of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Berwick, officiating.
The interment at Nuremberg Cemetery will be private.
