IN LOVING MEMORY
Velma Christine Riley, formerly of Fredonia and daughter of the late Nicholas & Lena Stevens Horning, graduated to eternity Saturday, September 4, 2021, at the age of 94. Mrs. Riley enjoyed a full life, and her passing occurred at her granddaughter's home in NC.
Mrs. Riley enjoyed the simplest of pleasures: cooking, reading, gardening, visiting with friends, sitting on the back porch watching the water, and listening to chimes blow in the wind. The Caldwell County School System was fortunate to have Mrs. Riley in their service as a cook until her retirement. As a member of the Fredonia Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Riley enjoyed fellowship with the Lord and never refused an offer of prayer.
Her final days were filled with laughter, fresh flowers, the view of great-grandchildren swimming, and the presence of her two beloved puppies. Those who attended her continually referred to her as "Sweetheart" for her endearing personality and easy smile, and right up to the end she expressed a sassy sense of humor and unexpected quick wit. Each night, as Mrs. Riley was tucked into bed, her family would pray over her and end her day with "I love you -Goodnight, Mamaw."
Velma Christine Riley leaves a legacy in the loved ones who survive her: Daughters, Sherry Prowell of Princeton, KY; Victoria (Kelly) Waldrop of Hubert, NC; Christy (Doug) Beller of Eddyville, KY; son, Troy (Marie) Riley of Hubert, NC; grandchildren Jolynn Lee, Trevor Prowell, Kayla Monroe, Stacy Urbanowski, Justin Beller and Monique Whittick; 10 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She touched countless hearts over the course of her life with a home that was always warm and inviting.
Waiting for her in eternity were Mrs. Riley's parents, her husband of 53 years, Allen Moore "Shorty" Riley; son, Nicky Riley; sister, Ann Sigler; brothers, T.J., Tom, Presley, Roy, and Aaron Horning.
The family will host visitation Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton. Funeral services will be held directly following visitation. Her son, Troy Riley, will officiate, with the assistance of Reese Baker graveside. Mrs. Riley will be laid to rest with her loved ones at the Beech Grove Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to support those who enabled her family to keep Mrs. Riley at home with her loved ones. Community Care & Hospice tended for Mrs. Riley with unwavering love and devotion, and donations can be made in her name to Kindred at Home Foundation: https://www.communityhch.com.
"While we mourn the absence of her presence, we rejoice in her eternity. Goodnight, Mamaw."
