Shirley Jane (Jennings) Boyd 86, passed away peacefully in her home, Sunday September 5, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband W. H (Cap'n Bill), son Stanley, infant child Karen, mother and father C.O. (Jake) and Evie Lee Jennings, mother- and father-in-law Jessie Lowe Boyd and Neal Longshore Boyd, sister Charlotte Jennings McDaniel, and brother Tommy Jennings. Survivors left to cherish her memory are children Janet Boyd, David (Pam Talbot) Boyd, Heath (Rebecca) Boyd, grandchildren Neal Boyd, Hanna (Andrew) Smith, Casey, Joseph (Brittany) Boyd, and sister Joyce Bridgeford. A host of great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Shirley was born and raised in Gadsden and was a 1952 graduate of Gadsden High School. After attending Auburn University several years, Shirley and Bill returned to Gadsden and married after being high school sweethearts. Shirley found work as a bookkeeper for a number of years while Bill pursued his passion of farming. Shortly after they began their family and were always active in community projects. Bill and Shirley partnered with Jake and Evie Lee (her parents) to run B & J Savette (on Hwy 411) for 10 years, providing a local food establishment for the community. In the 1970's Shirley took on the job of managing the school lunchroom for Gaston High School. She retired from lunchroom management to maintain and expand her immense garden of flowers. She was a passionate member and volunteer for the Etowah County Master Gardeners for many years. Throughout her life in North Gadsden, Bill and Shirley were devoted members of Turkeytown United Methodist Church.
Shirley was an incredible cook and her family recipes were and will be cherished by all her children and grandchildren. There are a number of dishes that were always requested for family get-togethers. She could create some amazing things with needle and thread. Over the years she created her own patterns and fashioned some incredible dresses and suits for her children. She was also known to make a wonderful cozy bed for her canine grandchildren! We cherish the memories of those handmade fashions. She shared her love for gardening and hydrangeas with her children. We each hold dear those plants she gifted from her beautiful gardens. Shirley loved to laugh and her laugh was indeed infectious. We will hold years of memories in our hearts forever. She will be missed….but we can count ourselves blessed to have had such wonderful parents. Forever in our hearts….your children.
