Karen Ostrander Underwood passed away after a month-long battle with brain cancer on April 7, 2021 at EvergreenHealth Hospice Care in Kirkland, WA at the age of 67.

Karen was born September 25, 1953 in Milwaukee, WI to Harriet and James Ostrander. The Ostrander's moved a lot when Karen was young due to her father's career in the meat packing industry with Swift & Co. Stops included Park Forest, In to New Milford, PA to Citrus heights, CA and then to Yakima, WA where Karen would graduate from Eisenhower High School in 1971. After high school, she went to college at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA and graduated in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in journalism.

After college, Karen was a technical writer for a manufacturing firm in downtown Seattle. She later moved to Allstate Insurance Company as a supervisor in operations. After a few years she began her career in customer service management beginning with Blue Cross of Washington managing the Washington Education Authority healthcare account. She then moved to Regence Blue Shield where she managed the Boeing healthcare account until her retirement in 2005. Karen met her husband, David, in 1985 and they wed in 1987. Their family started in Brier Washington with the birth of their first born Trenton in 1988. They moved to Redmond, Washington in 1990 where sons Collin (1991) and Kolton (1994) were born.

Karen enjoyed collecting many things, from paintings by her favorite artist including Teresa Saia and Renato Muccillo to Fitz and Floyd china and many Disney character figurines over the years. She loved her vacations with the family and gardening in the yard on warm summer days. She loved animals, especially her Irish setter dogs. Karen was a free spirit at heart and always lived her life as if every day was a gift. Karen is survived by her husband David Underwood, her three children, Trenton, Collin and Kolton, brother Jim and wife Connie Ostrander, nieces, nephews and many other family members from Seattle to St. Louis.
