Max Newton Clyde, 88, of Sheffield Village passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at the Wesleyan Village following a lengthy illness. He was born April 14, 1927 in Bellaire, MI and had resided in Sheffield Village since 2005. Max and his wife Connie previously lived in Michigan and Tennessee.

His early years were spent performing with his two sisters Enid and Floy as the "Little Serenaders" throughout much of western Michigan, Detroit and Chicago. The group was trained as singers, dancers, and instrumentalists by mother Lotte and father John, both professional musicians. The girls were also acrobats and Max was a ventriloquist. He played first chair clarinet in the Bellaire High School Band.

Max attended the University of Michigan (he played clarinet in the U of M Marching Band) and the University of Illinois for 12 months in the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program; then he was in active army service for 18 months in 1945-46. He graduated from University of Michigan in 1949 with a BSCE and started work with Michigan Department of Transportation. In 1951, he entered a one year post graduate course in Traffic Engineering at Yale University. Max and Connie Fountain were married during the 1951 Christmas break. He worked for 35 years at MDOT in Lansing, MI, retiring in 1984 as Assistant Deputy Director – Highways. Max had 10 years of service with the US Power Squadron in Lansing, retiring as a JN after supervising classes in Seamanship and Advanced Piloting, and serving one year as director of education.

Max and Connie moved to Traverse City, MI where he worked for seven years as an engineering consultant, learned to play the bass fiddle, and formed a small music group – clarinet, piano, and bass which performed professionally in the area but mostly had fun. He also served as a house husband while Connie worked to gain National Certification as a Speech-Language Pathologist.
Max and Connie moved to Tellico Village near Knoxville, TN in 1995. He played bass with the Tellico Topnotes, a big band; with the choirs and other groups on occasion at the Community Church; with four stage musicals (Li'l Abner, The Fantasticks, Mame, and 70 Girls 70) performed by the Tellico Players; and with other small groups on various occasions.

The Clydes moved to Sheffield Village, Ohio, a small town west of Cleveland in 2005. Their residence is near daughter Julia and her family.

Mr. Clyde is survived by his wife Connie Clyde; daughters Kathryn Pate (Jim Atwood) and Julia Welsh (Scott); son John Clyde (Ann); six grandchildren: Anna Kenney (Sean), Lesley Pate, Ali and Ian Clyde, Alexander and Christopher Welsh, great-grandchildren Lily, Liam, and Lila Grace Kenney; niece Janice Hardell and grand-niece Jesse Hardell.

He was preceded in death by his mother Lotte Clyde; father John Clyde; brothers John and Robert; sisters Floy Alschbach and Enid Morey.
