Randall "Randy" Howard Reed passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at his home in Brunswick, Maine on August 24, 2021. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on March 27, 1959. He graduated from Mount Desert Island High School in 1977 where he discovered a love of acting as a member of the Drama Club. He also performed dinner theater during the summers at The Deck House Restaurant in Southwest Harbor performing in his own versions of Bert & I skits. Randy recalled his days acting in theater as one of the most joyful and positive experiences of his life and he reminisced often of his castmates and the shows they performed in together.

Following high school, Randy enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Texas where he was an engine mechanic on C-130 cargo aircraft. While in Texas he enjoyed the Tex-Mex food, the Southern hospitality and the camaraderie he shared with the other airmen he served with. His experiences in the Air Force instilled in him a strong sense of patriotism and respect for the U.S. military.

After the military, Randy received training and gained certification to become a computer technician. One of the positions he was most proud of and enjoyed was as an IT professional with Bar Harbor Bank and Trust in Bar Harbor, Maine. For many years Randy worked as an independent contractor technician travelling the state of Maine servicing a variety of companies.

Randy's true vocation and passion was always writing. His prolific works included inspiring, heartfelt poetry, short stories, and children's books. His love of fantasy and science fiction novels inspired many of his short stories.

Randy was an avid reader, had a wide thirst for knowledge and a love of learning. He was self-taught in many subjects. His proudest achievement was singlehandedly building a beautiful new deck to use and enjoy with his wife Louise. It was a gift and labor of love which brought Randy an incredible source of joy and a deep sense of accomplishment.

Randy was well known to his family and friends for his wonderful sense of humor. Making someone laugh with his quick wit or a well-timed pun was one of his greatest joys in life. Randy was kind, gentle and caring and he had a deep and abiding trust and faith in God. He often encouraged others in the challenges they faced with a kind word and a willingness to help in any way he could.

Randy is survived by and will be dearly missed by his loving wife, friend, and soulmate of 33 years, Louise (Tourigny) Reed; parents James and Barbara (Carter) Reed of Somesville; sister Teddi Reed and her husband Sandy Wylie of Brunswick; niece Kate Bathras and her husband Tim and great-niece Norah of South Portland; niece Joanna Larson and great-nephews Carter and Adam of Charlotte, NC. On his wife's side, he is survived by brothers-in-law: Richard Tourigny of Stockton Springs, Paul Tourigny of Wells, Jerry Tourigny and his wife Katya and nephews Andrei and Daniel of Scarborough; also, a sister-in law Marilyn Long and her husband Brian of Waxhaw, NC and nephews Jimmy Long of Charleston, SC and Jake Long of Raleigh, NC.

We will greatly miss Randy's friendly smile, outgoing personality, playful spirit and hearty laughter.

A graveside service will be held at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at noon. A celebration of life will be held at Thompson Island in Acadia National Park on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. (Rain date: Sunday, October 24 at 2 p.m.)
