Charles Daniel Flaherty " Big Dan" left this world for greener gardens and bigger orchards on Aug. 29, 2021.

Dan was born in Oneonta to Louise LeBaron and Charles Flaherty.

He is one of five children and he would argue he was the best looking one!

He and his siblings, Carol (predeceased), Robert, Paul and Mary Ellen were raised in the Bronx before moving to a little, county town called Worcester in upstate New York.

Big Dan throughly enjoyed gardening and would plant various trees, fruits and vegetables every year. He planted an amazing apple orchard filled with a unique variety of apples which was envied by many. Anyone who visited, always left with a basket of his bounty.

My father, Big Dan, was an amazing loving man who was always full of wit and humor! He mastered the most difficult of crossword puzzles and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. His elaborate recipes often brought us into the late evening awaiting a delicious meal that did not disappoint.

One day, he reminisced about how he and his sister Carol would occasionally escape the strict catholic school they attended, sometimes for weeks at at time, so they could run the streets in the Bronx and enjoy fresh fruit from the street vendors until they were caught and returned to the nuns.

My father had an amazingly big heart that was full of love and warmth. He was generous to a fault and believed the good and trusted in many, into his final days.

Big Dan amassed a collection of things that would make most people in awe or scratch their heads in disbelief: rifles, cookbooks, Christmas tree houses, cast iron cookware, and oil lamps to name a few.

He lived in a few homes throughout his life and was devoted to building each one. His love of trees was also proven in Knox, where with the help of family and friends he planted a forest of pine trees. Many fun filled nights were shared with the Schmidt family at that home. His last residence on West Hill Road in Worcester, was his final masterpiece and home to his pride and joyful apple orchard.

Dan married in 1965 and had a son, Daniel and daughter, Tami. He unfortunately lost his son many years ago, however, I'm certain they are together now. Tami and her loving husband, Gary Pearlstein have two amazing boys, Dan and Drew, which made Dan a very proud grandfather.

He enjoyed weekly poker games with his buds and at the end of the year was always in the black and would state "pocket aces, nothing better!".

Every Saturday, he was up early looking forward to his good friend Mike to visit for a guaranteed round of bantering and laughs. Mike lovingly cared for the property and orchards and would always say how much he cared for my dad and helping him was a labor of love.

He has an amazing sister, Mary Ellen, who stood by his side through his final days and for which his family will be forever grateful. He also enjoyed a recent visit from His brother Bob and Paul.

Here's to another round of poker, never ending crossword puzzles, a sip of old overhault to sweeten the day with the best slice of apple pie in the sky!

Lake Noc', Big Dan!! You were truly and deeply loved by many!!
