He was born on Monday, August 19, 1946 to Haskell Ray Smith and Patsy Ophelia Burnett Smith in De Queen, Arkansas.

Joe Bob grew up in Broken Bow where he graduated in the class of 1964. He enjoyed playing football and hanging out with all his friends, whom he had remained close to all these years.

Joe Bob served his country as a pilot of a Sikorsky UH 34-D helicopter in the United States Marines Corps during the Vietnam War from 1967-1968. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and 21 Air Medals.

*So sad to hear Joe Bob is gone, I had planned to stop by and visit him the next time I was home. He was a great boss, and I really enjoyed the time I spent working at his CPA office. Ever so often, I would see a book fly across the room, I would just laugh. He had such a good heart. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
