MANY TRUTHS AND ONE LOVE

Many know the game, two truths, and a lie that is often served as an icebreaker to get to know the person you are meeting. Today, we celebrate the life of Mary Cross by sharing many truths to understand the one love of her life.

In Kosciusko where red clay paves the road, and the scent of rain fills the air, the dew of the morning bore a wildflower for a daughter to Lathan and Emma McCain. As a child, simple pleasures of life would be the molding of Mary's life as she balanced being a second mom to 13 siblings and discovering her own way of living. Although Mary spent most of her days trying to avoid mischief, family pranks were just a thing, and Mary seemed to be the epicenter for many. She fondly loved sisters who could be found (or not found saying Easter speeches)-You can thank Annie McCain-Riley for that. Mary believed in sharing scientific facts with her brothers, like "Nate, you know if you go to the bathroom and jump up and down, you can eat more food?" when they went to buffets as maturing adults.

Mary was the negotiator among her 13 siblings who loved her dearly. Those living to retell scandalous stories of Mary's life are Tammy Davis, Annie McCain-Riley, Shundre McCain, Maxine McCain, Marvin McCain, O'Dell McCain, David (Leo) McCain, Nate McCain, Liddeal McCain, James McCain, James "Bird" Winters, June McCain, Verna Ashford.

For work, she believed in service. Mary was one jukebox and fry pan away from her true love. Who knew serving the mature and dapper Thomas Cross would turn into a double date, a permanent home in Milwaukee, and 36 years of marriage? Mary loved kids. Her courage and determined nature would birth a baby girl at the age of 36 after 6 miscarriages (thank the LORD she was not named the often joke Thomasenia). Thomas and Mary would raise a beautifully electric blended family: Andre Cross, Alfonzo Cross, Regina Cross, Miracle Cross, Yolanda Cross (Baker), Kevin Cross, with Shuntaya Rodgers to add.

Through thick and thin there was a well-traveled aunt that served as a second mom to Mary. She and Nather Roby would travel to Hawaii, Bahamas, New York, etc. honestly any transportation outside of a donkey or turtle, Mary and Nather would ride to any stretch of North America.

Mary loved her sisters whether it was late-night telephone tags or playing Pokeno with red cups that turned into wine coolers; she loved making life a party. Mary enjoyed shopping, be it at J C Penny's with her sister-in-law, Minnie Cross, or by Catherine's Catalog (Tasha Jones thanks for hiding those the best you could).

Mary enjoyed Church! Be it a concert or revival, her Sunday's best dress was only the icing for coming before the LORD. Mary loved to pray, read her bible, and sing off-toned.

After years as a dedicated worker, Mary retired from the Veterans Affairs Hospital and focused on family.

Mary is treasured and remembered in love as a mother, wife, auntie (TeTe Mary), sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and community member of BRIA of Trinity.

Mary knew God and trusted the LORD for all things she could be healed from. Until the end, Mary shared this one love for the unity of her family and lived as a suffering servant. She let each battle tell its story of victory and the progress of her life. Mary will forever be remembered and loved.
