He was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the son of the late Charlie Joe and Pearl Lester Shelton.
He was a life long resident of the area and was a retired miner. He was a member of the UMWA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son in law, Bobby Jamison; two great-great grandchildren, Brayton Wayne Miller and Aria Mae Ward; sisters, Lucille Johnson, Oney Meyer, and Mary Jean Gillespie; and brothers, Raymond, Stuart, and Eugene Shelton.

Funeral services for Douglas Shelton will be conducted Friday, September 10, 2021 at 12pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Terry Keen officiating. Interment will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. Pallbearers will be: Jermaine Marshall, Kevin Miller, Billy Davis, Randy Davis, Robert Davis, Wayne Martin, and Zachary Cochran. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Brian Street, Mike Paul, and Keith Kincaid.
