He served in the war of 1812 as Colonel, he was commissioned about 1813. He moved to Tan Yard Hill, now Callaway, in then Harlan (now Bell) County, with his father. All of his children were born there and he and his wife lived the rest if their lives there. These people were some of the very first settlers on the Cumberland River. Tan Yard Hill is named for Lewis J Green, Jr., (William's father) who had moved there and would tan skins there.
