Johnny Cheshire Lewis, 91, of 1718 Virginia Road, passed away Monday, September 6, 2021 in Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton.
Mr. Lewis was born in Nash County on March 23, 1930, and was the son of the late Johnny Cheshire Lewis, Sr. and Patty Crisp Lewis Hyde. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Simon Hyde, a son, Johnny D. Lewis, and by a sister, Audrey Wilkins.
A supply clerk from Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he retired in 1995, he was a man who was dedicated to his family and church. A former member of Perrytown Assembly of God in Colerain, more recently he enjoyed his renewed membership in Faith Pentecostal Holiness Church in Edenton where he had formerly been a longtime member. From the early age of six he learned to play the mandolin by watching his father, and continued to play throughout his life ministering with music in area churches and nursing homes. A member of the former Old Time Gospel Story Band, he always gave God the credit for his musical talent and always enjoyed sharing it with others. He was a US Marine Corps veteran.
Surviving is his wife of 51 years, Aldine Causeway Lewis; a daughter, Tammy Bridges of Tarboro; a son, Jonathan C. Lewis (wife, Becky) of Greer, SC; two granddaughters, Heather Bridges and Emily McCarter (husband, Josh); a great-grandson, Robert Austin McCarter; and a niece, Pattie Mullen.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Faith Pentecostal Holiness Church, and will be conducted by Pastors Danny Gurganus and David Baker. A private burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Tarboro.
With the resurgence in the area of the Covid Virus, no formal visitation is planned; however, friends may speak with the family in the church the hour prior to the services on Friday. Masks and social distancing measures are encouraged.
