Philip Hervey Hobbs
MERIDEN - Philip Hervey Hobbs, 83, of Meriden, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2017. He was the husband of 63 years to Barbara Marston Hobbs.
He was born in Wilton, Maine, son of the late Hervey W. Hobbs, and the late Elsie Miles Hobb on Oct. 2, 1933.
He attended Farmington High in Maine, where he held the record for pole vault for the State of Maine for 11.5 years using a bamboo pole. He was co-captain in high school, football, plus other sports. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1957 during the Korean Conflict as a sergeant, and played softball for the U.S. Army in his division. In 1963, he organized the first Royal Rangers program for boys, Outpost 1, in the Southern New England District. Phillip was a religious instructor at the Connecticut School for Boys in Middletown and Meriden. He was on the Board of the Locksmiths Association of Connecticut. In 1974, Phillip opened Phil's Lockshop Inc., and specialized in safe cracking, where he got the nickname ""Drill Bits"" for opening a bank vault called the Mosler Monster. He was a member of First Assembly of God, Meriden.
Beside his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his three children, Wayne Hobbs and wife, Cheryl, Peggy and husband, William Brooks, Dale Hobbs and wife, Claire; grandchildren, Nicole Gonzalez, Michael Hobbs, Valerie Hobbs and her husband, Matthew Merritt, Brian and his wife, Nikki Tornberg; great-grandchildren, Cassie Corea, Jasmine and Alex Gonzalez, Owen and Olivia Merritt, Madison and Emily Tornberg; great-great-grandchildren, CJ Sepulveda; brothers, Harry Hobbs and his late wife, Trina, of California, Roger Hobbs and wife, Brenda, of Madison, Maine. He was predeceased by his sister, Joyce and her husband, Glen Booska, of Vermont, and his other sister Shirley and husband, Guy Brann, of Farmington, Maine.
Funeral will be held at Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St., in Rocky Hill on Thursday, Feb. 16, from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to any Veteran Association of your choice.
