Walter Cliftin Thompson passed away peacefully on September 2, 2021.
He was born in Memphis, TN to Walter Cliftin Thompson, Sr and Esther Dauriac Thompson Green on January 25, 1934. Walt lost his father at young age and was raised by his stepfather Ernest Green. He grew up near Memphis State College and attended the teaching school on the campus and graduated from East High School. He obtained a BS in Arts and Sciences from Memphis State College, and a BS in Chemical Engineering and Masters in Science from University of Mississippi and was a member of Sigma Epsilon fraternity and the Air Force Reserves.
He began his career as a Chemical Engineer with Humble Oil in Baytown, TX. In 1958, he was married to Gloria Ann Wallace, whom he met while tutoring her in geometry. His children Susan, Chris and Laura were born in Baytown, but the family moved to Charlotte, NC in 1964 where he continued as a textile Chemical Engineer with Celanese. The family moved to Greensboro, NC in 1971 when Walt accepted a position with Lorillard Tobacco Company in the new field of Quality Assurance utilizing statistical analysis methods. He was a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQC).
When Walt retired from Lorillard in 2001, he and Gloria pursued many interests together: flying airplanes, genealogical research, traveling and community involvement; Walt was most involved with Ham Radio (WA2LT) and the Civil Air Patrol. A lifelong Episcopalian, he was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church and served on the Vestry. Walt moved to Well Spring Retirement Community following the death of his beloved wife in 2013. He spent many happy years there making new friends, playing bingo, working out and participating in activities.
Walt is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 55 years, Gloria Wallace Thompson; and his grandson, Gary (JR) Cooper, Jr. He is survived by his daughter Susan Thompson; son Christopher Thompson and his wife Ann; and daughter Laura Kilmartin and her husband Paul; grandchildren Michael Thompson (Heather), Christopher Bonner, Kathleen Kilmartin and Patrick Kilmartin; and great-grandchildren Tabitha, Damon and Shelby.
A private family service to celebrate his life and the interment of the ashes will be held on September 9, 2021 officiated by the Very Rev. Milton Williams.
