Born September 15, 1926 in Plum, he was the son of the late Howard and Margretta (LaMont) Holmes.
Walt was a 1944 graduate of Plum High School. He served as a Staff Sergeant with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre with the 2nd Emergency Squadron #646, nicknamed the Snafu Snatchers.
Walt was Glenn Buick's Service Manager for 42 years before retiring at age 65. His second career lasted another 26 years managing the warehouse for his son's businesses, Babcor & Mr. Take Out Bags. He was a member of Union Presbyterian Church of Murrysville, and the Gideons.
Walt loved working, gardening, his pets, and golfing with his two oldest sons.
In addition to his parents and wife, Walt was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Cassandra Holmes; his four brothers, Robert, William, Roy, Melvin; and an infant sister, Ellen.
Walter is survived by his children, W. Kenneth (Sue) Holmes, Jr., Jeffrey A. (Joyce) Holmes, Brian L. (Carol) Holmes, Susan J. (Joseph Dutton) Holmes, Peggy L. Holmes, J. Howard Holmes; grandchildren, Justin (Amanda), Benton, Brett, Drew (Lynn), Shawn, Jenelle, Lindsay (Paul) Hoke, T.J. Lennox, Jennifer (Jeremia) Feyrer, Jay (Mackenzie), Kathleen; 15 great-grandchildren; and surrounded by extended family and friends.
Interment will be in Plum Creek Cemetery, Plum, Pa.
