Joshua Holmes Smith, resident of Wallace and formerly of Mount Olive, passed away in the early morning hours on Saturday, September 4, 2021 while at Onslow Memorial Hospital. He was 37.

Josh graduated in 2002 from Southern Wayne High School with the distinction of being a presidential scholar and an honor graduate. He furthered his education at Mount Olive College, receiving a bachelor's degree in 2006, graduating with honors. His working career began with employment with the Transportation Security Administration. At the time of his passing he was employed with Duplin County Department of Social Services as an income maintenance caseworker.

Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 7, at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park. Officiating will be the Rev. Diane Knauf, pastor of Mount Olive Presbyterian Church, the church in which Josh was raised up. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate anyone wishing to remember Josh to consider making a monetary gift to his sons for their future educational needs. Checks may be presented to either his wife or his parents for this consideration.

Loved ones who survive Josh include his wife, Julie Cavenaugh Smith, and two sons, Caleb Holmes Smith, age 5, and Oliver Murphy Smith, age 1, all of the home in Wallace; his parents, Jeffrey H. and Sherry Barwick Smith of Mount Olive; his brother, Jordan Smith of Mount Olive; his maternal grandmother, Peggy Outlaw Barwick of Mount Olive; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Andy and Ava Cavenaugh of Wallace; a brother-in-law, Jacob Cavenaugh of Wallace; his beloved feline friend, Eli, of the home; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Morris Barwick; and his paternal grandparents, Bill and Gene Smith.

Josh was all about anything to do with water--the beach, White Lake, or wherever a body of water might have happened to be. Quite the talker, there were never any strangers to Josh; he'd talk to anyone. Josh was a marvel at anything Nickelodeon. He enjoyed simple television programs such as The Three Stooges (and about them he knew many trivial facts), the Golden Girls, and Mama's Family. Though he was born with minor learning disabilities, he excelled at school and was quite intelligent. He possessed a heart of gold, was ever gentle, always kind, and could be summed up as being a big teddy bear. He enjoyed eating, whether it be fine meals or snack and junk foods, and each and every week, the family had to have a "taco night" to appease Josh's taco desire. He had been in the marching band while in high school, first excelling at playing the trumpet, and later the saxophone. While he was of the younger generation of the population, he loved the old-time traditional hymns of the church. Indeed Joshua Smith will be sorely missed, by his family, his work family, and his circle of friendships.
